My iPad is 8 years old. Until writing this, I didn’t realize how long ago my first year of undergrad was, when I was provided the iPad by my university.
More versatile than a computer and easier to bring traveling, I have it with me currently. I like the fancy pencil; just charge it and you’re good to write or draw.
A whole different world emerges when typing becomes involved. The physical keyboard attachment requires 100% of your patience because it works 10% of the time. You can try everything: closing the app, putting the keyboard away, turning off the iPad, opening a different app… And every time the on-screen keyboard pops up you know the physical keyboard still isn’t connected, causing your heart to break or your blood to boil, depending on how recently you’ve eaten.
The screen keyboard is enough for a google search or a few sentences. Once it passes that limit, a good idea turns into a blog post that won’t get written.
Now, I have an online side hustle (yess I can hear the applause, keep cheering me on) and it is becoming more of a problem problem. I’m considering buying a new keyboard setup.
When everything’s working, like right now, I hesitate to change anything about my 8-year-old pal; but when the keyboard stops working mid-thought I could throw the whole thing off the boat. (Did I mention I’ve been living on a sail boat for the past 2 weeks?)
All this because of some hours doing freelance work. But the minute you start making money for yourself, there’s a way to write off business expenses. And this is, in fact, a business expense! Being in the position to have business expenses makes me feel rather grown up and I’m googling how to get tax breaks because taxes are no fun and we all want to pay less in the end and…… So if I’m going to buy this keyboard anyways, I might as well remember to write it down in April.
